Mirrors in Feng Shui: Where to Put Them and Where Not To

The mirror is probably the most debated element in Feng Shui. It is seen as an object that amplifies and redirects the energy of a space — which is why placement matters. The good news: most of the rules match what a designer would recommend anyway.

A mirror facing the front door

The most common question. In most schools of Feng Shui, a mirror placed directly opposite the front door is considered unfavorable: it is said to "push" the energy entering the home straight back out the door. The simple fix is to move it to a side wall of the hallway, perpendicular to the door. There it keeps its practical role — a last look before you head out — and brightens the hallway.

Mirrors in the hallway

Apartment hallways are usually narrow and dark. A large mirror on the long wall visually doubles the width of the hallway and reflects light from the adjoining rooms. Just avoid mirrors facing each other, which create infinite reflections — seen as restless in Feng Shui and tiring to the eye.

Mirrors in the bedroom

The general rule is that the mirror should not reflect the bed. A mirror on the inside of a wardrobe door, one on the wall next to the door, or one in the walk-in closet are the safe options. More about bedrooms in the Feng Shui bedroom guide.

Mirrors in the living and dining room

Here a mirror is considered favorable when it reflects something beautiful: a window with greenery, the dining table (associated with abundance) or natural light. Avoid having it reflect cluttered corners, the bathroom door or storage areas.

Mirrors in the bathroom

The mirror above the washbasin is necessary and neutral in Feng Shui. What matters is that it is large enough not to "cut off" the heads of taller people and that it is well lit from the front.

General rules

Broken, cracked or stained mirrors get replaced.
Place mirrors where they reflect light, greenery or tidy spaces.
A mirror that is too large for a small room can make the space feel restless — proportion matters.
