Feng Shui for a Small Apartment

Feng Shui books often start from large houses with gardens and a chosen orientation. In an apartment block you don't pick the orientation or where the doors go, but the principles apply just as well — they matter even more, because every square meter does more than one job.

The entrance: the "mouth" of the apartment

In Feng Shui, the front door is where energy enters the home. In practical terms, it is also the first thing you see when you get home. A bright hallway, with no shoes scattered around, a closed coat cabinet and warm lighting makes all the difference. If you can see straight through to a window or the balcony door from the entrance, the advice is to add something that "stops" the eye: a plant, a bookcase, a curtain.

The Bagua map on your apartment's floor plan

The Bagua map divides the floor plan into nine areas, each linked to an area of life. It is laid over the apartment's plan starting from the front door wall. In irregularly shaped apartments, some areas are "missing" or fall in the bathroom or storage closet — which is usually where the recommendations begin. Order before anything else

The first Feng Shui principle in a small apartment is one any designer would recommend: fewer objects, closed storage, clear surfaces. Clutter is seen as blocked energy; in practice, it is also what makes a small space feel even smaller.

Clear zones in multi-purpose rooms

When the living room doubles as an office, or the bedroom as a dressing room, Feng Shui recommends giving each function its own zone. The desk, for example, faces the room's door rather than having its back to it. The bed is not placed in direct line with the desk. Rugs and different lighting define the zones without walls.

Light and air

Don't block natural light with tall furniture in front of the windows.
Layered artificial lighting keeps the space lively in the evening.
Airing the rooms daily and a few healthy plants are among the simplest "remedies".

The bathroom and the kitchen

Keep the bathroom door closed and the toilet lid down — a Feng Shui rule that is also plain common sense. In the kitchen, the hob should not sit right next to the sink (fire next to water); where there is no other option, a stretch of countertop between them is the usual solution.
